About Our Taxes in Retirement Seminars

What Our Taxes in Retirement Seminars Cover

Retirement changes how you are taxed. Withdrawals from 401(k)s and traditional IRAs, pension income, and Social Security benefits are each treated differently under federal rules, and Ohio applies its own treatment on top. Our taxes in retirement seminars explain how these pieces fit together and what you can consider before you stop working.

These are educational sessions rather than sales presentations. Western Reserve Capital Management is a fee-only fiduciary firm, compensated only by our clients, and we sell no financial products or insurance. Sessions are general and educational in nature and are not tax advice; attendees are encouraged to consult a qualified tax professional about their own circumstances.

What It Costs

These are free community educational sessions. There is no cost to attend, no sales presentation, and no products or services are offered for sale.

Who It's For

Our seminars are designed for adults age 50 and older, including both pre-retirees and current retirees. The content is most relevant for people within 10-15 years of retirement or already retired.

What To Bring

General questions about your retirement planning concerns, a notepad for taking important notes, and your spouse or partner if retirement planning is a joint decision.

What We Cover

What You'll Learn

Each session explains how retirement income is taxed at the federal and Ohio level, in plain language and without jargon:

  • How retirement account withdrawals are taxed. How distributions from 401(k)s and traditional IRAs are treated, how Roth accounts differ, and what changes once required minimum distributions begin.
  • Roth conversions. What a conversion does, why the years between retiring and the start of required distributions are often when they get considered, and the tradeoffs on both sides.
  • The order you draw from your accounts. Why the sequence you pull from taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts can change what you pay across a full retirement, not just in one year.
  • How Social Security benefits are taxed. When benefits become taxable at the federal level, and how other income sources affect that calculation.
  • Medicare premiums and IRMAA. How your income from two years earlier sets your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums, and why one unusual income year can raise costs later.
  • Qualified charitable distributions. How giving directly from an IRA can count toward a required distribution, and what it takes to qualify.

Sessions run about two hours, including time for questions.

Where We Host Seminars

We hold taxes in retirement seminars at public libraries and community venues across Northeast Ohio, including Richfield and Tuscarawas. We maintain offices in Hudson, Akron, and New Philadelphia, and our advisors present in the communities they serve. Sessions are held in the evening so they are easier to attend, and seating is limited by the size of each venue, so registering ahead is worthwhile.

If you would like us to bring a seminar to your library, community center, or employer, let us know.
